Primary Science

A two session course focusing on the Primary Science Curriculum.

Who is this course for?

This course is for teachers delivering Primary Science lessons.

What are the objectives or outcomes?

The first session will have a particular focus on the ‘Working Scientifically’ component of the Primary Science Curriculum. This session will focus on developing the following generic scientific enquiry skills:

  • Planning and setting up different types of enquiries
  • Identifying and classifying
  • Gathering and recording data
  • Using equipment
  • Reporting, presenting and communicating data/findings

The second session will focus on tackling the more challenging concepts in the Key Stage 2 Primary Science Curriculum. We will look at how to bring Classification, Evolution and Forces to life in the classroom by simple experiment and demonstrations as well as developing activities to ensure a high level of student engagement and progress.

Two twilight sessions, 1.00pm until 3.30pm, as follows:-

Meet the Facilitator

Joanna Cavanagh

Head of Science, Alban TSA SLE, Beaumont School

Joanna is currently Head of a large science department at Beaumont school. She has previously held the role of Key Stage 4 Coordinator. In previous roles Joanna has been Head of Chemistry, Head of Year and Head of Key Stage 3. Joanna has been teaching for 15 years and has worked in a Boys Grammar school, a mixed independent school as well as Beaumont. In 2009 Joanna became a Specialist Leader of Behaviour and Attendance and in 2014 was appointed an SLE for Science in the ATSA. She has also led on a whole-school learning project, chaired a learning improvement team and has been a member of the Beaumont Teaching and Learning Team.
